Outreach Ministries
Caring, Sharing, and Serving Others
News from Trinity Outreach
The Outreach Committee has decided to take a break from collecting supplies for UMCOR. (Of course if anyone wants to donate health or layette kits they will be gratefully received since the need goes on.)
The following items have been collected for layettes. 36 cloth diapers, 28 diaper pins, 35 receiving blankets, 12 baby washcloths, and 52 body suits. We thank you for these gifts .
Plans for the fall are underway. There are many items needed for WINGS and we hope to coordinate with the work that our young people are doing for that organization. WINGS's resale shop in Palatine was demolished from fire on June 16 so it is uncertain just what donations can be handled at this time. It is hoped they will be back in business by fall.
Nothing But Nets
The Outreach Committee is supporting “Nothing but Nets” as part of its Rainbow Covenant. This charitable organization has distributed 3 million nets, predominantly to Africa, to help in the fight against Malaria. This dreadful disease is caused by the bite of a certain breed of mosquito and kills one million people every year. The majority of the victims are children. Short presentations during Vacation Bible School will describe the problem and how we can help eradicate it.
NIC CONFERENCE NEWS
The Northern Illinois Conference (NIC) of the United Methodist Church (UMC) has now raised well over $500,000 for Haiti earthquake relief, donated several tons of relief supplies and has committed to long-term assistance with the people of Haiti.
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in January killed more than 230,000 people, collapsed more than 225,000 homes and impacted 3 million people.
Among those who lost their lives in this devastating earthquake were the Reverends Sam Dixon and Clint Rabb of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Dixon and Rabb were in Port-au-Prince to meet with members of the Methodist Church of Haiti to talk about ways to improve and develop the country.
At their annual conference in June, members of the Northern Illinois Conference voted overwhelmingly to continue fund raising efforts, to engage in advocacy campaigns that work toward an end to the discriminatory treatment of Haitian refugees and to maintain a presence in solidarity with the Haitian people long after the cameras leave.
Worldwide, the UMC has collected well over $18 million for Haiti relief work.
Rainbow Covenant
Thanks to the generous contributions from the Trinity congregation, all of the goals for the Rainbow Covenant were met or exceeded in 2009. A total of $12,161 was collected and distributed among the various categories, and $389 was transferred to Trinity‘s budget to help pay the apportionments. A detailed listing of the Rainbow Covenant distribution is posted on the Outreach bulletin board located in the hallway next to the church office.
Uruund Bible
Missionaries, Marvin and Jean Wolford, spent the majority of their careers in the Congo ministering to the people and translating the Bible into Uruund. This was a monumental undertaking and Trinity was a long time supporter of their efforts many years ago. We received a letter from Jean in December with the good news that the Bible has finally been published. Her joy is expressed in the opening sentence of her letter.
“I know you will be praising the LORD with me when I tell you I am at last holding an URRUND BIBLE in my hands!”
Unfortunately, Marvin passed away before the Bible was published. Her letter and pictures of the ceremony in Kapanga to dedicate the Bible are posted on the Outreach bulletin board. She is also asking for our prayers and any financial support that can be provided as the ministry continues in the Congo.

Nothing But Nets

This is a campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa, by the use of hanging nets. Campaign partners include the United Methodist Church, the United Nations Foundation, Sports Illustrated, the National Basketball Association, Millennium Promise and the Measles Initiative. Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, causes the death of 1/5 of all children under 5 years old in Africa. Insecticide-treated bed nets prevent malaria transmission by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the 7 vast majority of transmissions occur. The cost of a net is $10 and can last a family for about four years.
