Erasers on Pencils.

Why do we put erasers on pencils?

Because we all make mistakes.

I would like to establish a new tradition here at Trinity—the “erasers on pencils” moment.

Among the scariest moments that I have experienced in ministry have been those related to thank yous and recognitions of various kinds. Informal thank yous and recognitions are the worst, because someone is almost always left out. Even highly planned moments somehow miss someone. On very rare occasions, the “missing” has been deliberate.

Most of the time, the miss is mundane. In my case, it happens when brain cells are asleep, or when my one public speaking phobia—remembering names—kicks in. I have been known to freeze on the names of friends of long and dear standing, even family members, at the most embarrassing public moments.

I would hate to think that we will shy away from saying a hearty “thank you” or giving a well deserved recognition because we make mistakes.

So, I would like to start a new tradition—the “erasers on pencils” moment. This “do-over” time will allow us to supplement a thank you or recognition with well deserved praise for folks who may not have been included initially. It is a time of grace that recognizes that we all make mistakes.

Such a tradition will not replace due diligence, especially with official thank yous and recognitions. We will try to be scrupulous in assuring that these special moments are covered completely. Indeed, we will probably refrain from “surprise” recognitions because, by nature, they do not allow us to vet the details.

But when we do miss someone or something, please let us know, graciously and with understanding, so that we can correct the situation.

Why do we put erasers on pencils?

Because we all make mistakes.

When we are mistaken, please help us to make things right.

Thank you.

Summer Pastor's Class

This Summer, I would like to establish a special Pastor’s class. We will use the book by Justo Gonzales on the Apostle’s Creed. This excellent book by a respected Methodist scholar theologian and historian, recounts the historic and Biblical basis for the Creed. It is an excellent review of the basics of the Christian faith, a sort of adult Confirmation class, if you will. I will add reflections upon the beliefs of other faiths by way of comparison and contrast. The class will be held at the regular adult Sunday School time of 9:15 a.m. Join us for an adventure of faith.
