"BULLYING" BY Miss Jacki (Part One)
When was the last time you casually asked your child or grandchild who the bullies are and who gets tormented at their school? If you haven’t discussed this lately – or ever – you may be surprised at how knowledgeable your student is about survival skills in and around school.
Recently, I attended a presentation at my daughter’s middle school. The speaker was Jodee Blanco, a successful publicist and author who was bullied beginning in 5th grade and continuing through high school. She’s written two books: Please Stop Laughing at Me: One Woman’s Inspirational Story and Please Stop Laughing at Us: One Survivor’s Extraordinary Quest to Prevent School Bullying. Following are summaries of some parent tips from her web site, http://www.jodeeblanco.com/survival_parents.htm.
“What not to say if your child is being bullied or tormented:
• ‘Ignore the bullies and they’ll go away.’
• ‘They’re just jealous.’
• ‘Years from now, you’ll be so successful, and these kids who are picking on you will be in jail, scrubbing floors or worse.’
• ‘I know how you feel…’
• ‘Be patient.’”
What to say and do:
“Step One—‘I don’t know how you feel. I can’t imagine the pain you’re in, but it must be awful.’ Then, sit back, and let your child vent.
“Step Two—‘Let’s talk about an action that we can take together today towards helping to solve this problem of bullying that you’re facing.’ Next, pick up the phone or jump on the internet while your child is there sitting with you, [and together find some organized activities ONE TOWN over from where you live.] You want your child to meet new faces and make new friends outside of school.
“Step Three—When you bring your child to this activity, meet and befriend some of the other parents and suggest social outings that your families can all enjoy together.
“Step Four—If you think a therapist would benefit your child, make sure you research the therapist thoroughly…Attend the first few sessions with your child [so that] your child feels like you’re addressing a problem together as opposed to he or she is the problem.”
"Step Five—AFTER your child is taken care of, contact school officials.
Blanco also has advice if you suspect your child is the “mean popular kid” and how to know for sure. More on that in the next Tidings. Together, Trinity youth and youth ministers will be developing a covenant to guide their actions and words as Christians at church, school, home and in the world. See you in church!
TRINITY YOUTH & FRIENDS
Fridays at 4 pm
Youth gather at Trinity to assist WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger). This
ministry helps women and children.

PADS
and Pizza, WINGS and Wings
Service Opportunities for Trinity Youth every Friday
Trinity Youth have responded to the needs of homeless persons in our community by setting up rooms for PADS guests each Friday afternoon. Other youth groups have responded to this need as well. They come to Trinity the first Friday of every month to serve.
Youth leader Dave Borum is working with our neighbors across the street at WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) to discover ways our young people might also respond to the needs of homeless and abused women and children who have suffered from domestic violence.
The first Friday of each month is designated "WINGS and Wings" for Trinity Youth. Young people meet at 4:00 as usual to provide hands-on service at the WINGS facility across the street. Youth are asked to bring $3.00 each Friday to cover food costs. Contact Dave Borum for more information.

What We Expect
Pastor Dan, Dave and Jacki met with parents and young people from seven of Trinity’s families with jr. and sr. high students. We learned about event and programming possibilities and responded to two questions:
1. What do you expect from Trinity church for Trinity Youth?
2. How can Trinity staff support the church in meeting your expectations?
Families who couldn’t make the meeting are encouraged to contact Dave, Jacki or Pastor Dan. Your input is vital to our ministry.
So, what do we expect?
-
Open communication between staff, parents and young people. Staff will continue to use email, post cards, Tidings, Sunday bulletin announcements, the web site and the telephone to stay connected. Quarterly or seasonal meetings with parents will be scheduled.
-
Opportunities for young people to serve in mission and stewardship. The 2008-09 Youth Calendar summarizes service opportunities including PADS, Nothing but Nets, 30-hour Famine, All Church Rummage Sale, and the Appalachian Service Project.
-
Our young people will participate and serve in worship. Youth will plan and deliver the 10:30 worship service on October 19. A youth cookout lunch will follow. Youth are encouraged to meet on Friday afternoons at 4:00 beginning Oct. 3 (PADS, Pizza and PLANNING!).
-
The church to provide Christian education leading to the spiritual formation of young people. Y.O.S. will be offered every Sunday from 9:15 – 11:30 a.m. beginning in October. Jr. and Sr. High are invited to join in whenever they arrive. Parents are encouraged to identify other days and times when young people will come.
-
The church to provide Christian education and spiritual support for parents, and information about what the young people are learning. Parents are invited to attend a 6-week series in October and November led by Jacki Bogolia as well as attend Y.O.S. any Sunday morning.
-
We expect age appropriate activities where young people may meet with others their own age, become better acquainted, work, serve and have fun. PADS and Pizza will be offered every Friday afternoon from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Separate activities and service opportunities for Jr. and Sr. High will be planned. The two groups will join together for food and fellowship. Young people are invited to have Lunch with Dave the 2nd Sunday of every month.
-
Agreement on what to call our young people. Jr. High and Sr. High groups will name themselves during PADS and Pizza in October.
As baptized and confirmed United Methodists we publicly professed our Christian faith and beliefs. We vowed to faithfully participate in the church’s ministries by our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service. We acknowledged God’s gifts to us. Thanks be to God for God’s steadfastness in these covenants with us!
